As winter winds down and we move into the warmer months, it’s natural to think about preemptively protecting or repairing your metal roof with a rubber coating. But there’s a reason we have the saying, “April showers bring May flowers.” Spring brings rain, and rain can cause corrosion on your metal roof — not to mention making it tricky to schedule a roof coating application when the weather could change without warning. That’s why Inland Coatings SEBS products are so trusted. They develop early water resistance, so the potential for wash-off in a quickly changing climate is essentially eliminated.

Inland Coatings and Early Water Resistance

One of the more notable projects for Inland Coatings was at Labrador NATO Base in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Newfoundland. While the project was somewhat small in scope (approximately 14,000 square feet of metal roofing), the urgency was severe. Fast-changing weather conditions made it imperative that the products used to repair the roof — a through panel screw-fastened system of standing seam configuration — cured quickly. Enter: RC-2200RPM Mesh, and RC-2000.

Seams, fasteners, and any penetrations were coated with Inland Coatings’ RC-2200 Rubber Seam Compound and RPM mesh. But while the factory-painted finish was in generally good condition, there was great concern with a through-the-roof air handler that had been causing ongoing issues. A “cricket” made of foam insulation, OSB and vinyl tarps had been used as a temporary fix. We removed all of that and installed a permanent solution, which was covered by our product to secure the seals. RC-2000 completed the job just in time, before the skies opened up and it poured.

Hail and Your Metal Roof

Hail is something else to remember when it comes to volatile spring and summer weather. Not only can hail cosmetically harm a metal roof, it can also damage seams and reduce the roof’s water-shedding capabilities. RC-2000 can help protect against hail damage, potentially saving you time and money dealing with insurance claims. Because it cures quickly, RC-2000 can be applied when the weather is less than predictable.

How Water Resistance is Achieved

Our products are resistant to water, corrosion and extreme weather conditions, thanks to their outstanding adhesion to properly prepared surfaces. RC-2000 is thermally stable, offering 87% solar reflectance to resist the peeling and cracking that ultraviolet exposure and extreme weather can cause. Because it can be applied within a temperature range of 40°–110° F (4.4°–43.3°C), the window of time when installation can take place is incredibly flexible.

Don’t Let Bad Weather Stop You from Coating Your Metal Roof

Inland Coatings products coat several different types of roofs. Metal roofs and single-ply (TPO, EPDM, Hypalon) roofs can benefit from our rubber roof coatings. Modifieds/BUR and SPUF roofing systems can also be coated with Inland Coatings products. Regardless of which of these roofing systems you have, our synthetic rubber coatings come with even more benefits than early water resistance. Because it’s ENERGY STAR rated and features a Class A fire rating (the best), RC-2000 can save energy costs while making your structure safer. This spring, don’t let unstable weather stop you from repairing and protecting your metal roof.
