XD TravelPRO Roof Coating

Q: What is the best type of coating for an RV roof?

It depends on your roof substrate: Polyurethane — best durability and abrasion resistance, good for roofs with foot traffic Liquid rubber — best for rubber and metal roofs; highly compatible and flexible Silicone — excellent UV and ponding water resistance but harder to recoat later Acrylic — good budget-friendly option; easy to apply

Road Guard XD TravelPRO is a single-component, moisture-cure aliphatic polyurethane roof coating. This premium product forms a system with maximum durability and resistance to harsh weather and UV radiation. Can be applied in a single coat over 32 wet mils thick without blistering, while maintaining adhesion, making it an ideal choice for extending roof life with fewer application steps.

Features

Exceptional Durability — one of the hardest, most abrasion-resistant roof coatings available.
High Tensile Strength — resists tears and withstands stresses caused by roof movement. Ideal for roofs that expand and contract with temperature changes.
Excellent Elongation — can stretch 325% before tearing, bridging hairline cracks and minor surface movement.
Impact Resistance — stands up to hail, foot traffic, and falling debris better than most other coatings.
Hard, Tough Finish — resists scuffing, punctures, and mechanical damage.

Coverage Guide

Match your RV length to the chart below to estimate your project needs. Estimates assume a standard ~8 ft wide RV.

RV Length	Est. Roof Area	Liquid Rubber Requires 2 Coats	XD TravelPRO Thicker — 1 Coat Only
16–20 feet	128–160 sq. ft.	4–5 Gallons	3–4 Gallons
21–25 feet	168–200 sq. ft.	5–6 Gallons	4–5 Gallons
26–30 feet	208–240 sq. ft.	7–8 Gallons	~5 Gallons
31–35 feet	248–280 sq. ft.	8–9 Gallons	5–6 Gallons

Buy slightly more than estimated to allow for touch-ups and ensure you don't run short mid-job.

FAQs

What is the best type of coating for an RV roof?

It depends on your roof substrate:

Polyurethane — best durability and abrasion resistance, good for roofs with foot traffic
Liquid rubber — best for rubber and metal roofs; highly compatible and flexible
Silicone — excellent UV and ponding water resistance but harder to recoat later
Acrylic — good budget-friendly option; easy to apply

Do I need a primer before applying the coating?

It depends on the product and substrate. Road Guard XD TravelPRO and Liquid Rubber do not require a primer. However, fiberglass and some metal roofs may benefit from a primer coat for better adhesion. Always check to make sure you know what you are coating.

Can I walk on my RV roof after coating?

Yes, once fully cured, both liquid rubber and polyurethane coatings can handle light foot traffic for maintenance purposes. Polyurethane coatings offer the best foot traffic resistance. Avoid dragging equipment or sharp objects across the surface. Silicone is the slickest when wet.

Can I apply RV roof coating in cold weather?

Most roof coatings require a minimum application temperature of 40°F and should not be applied if temperatures will drop below freezing within 24 hours of application. Solvent-based formulas generally have better cold-weather application tolerance. Both Road Guard roof coatings (Liquid Rubber Roof Coating and XD TravelPRO Roof Coating) are solvent based.

How long will the coating last on my RV roof?

A properly applied, quality coating should last 5–10 years on an RV roof depending on:

Product quality and type
Number of coats and total mil thickness applied
Climate and sun exposure
How often the RV is used and stored outdoors
The amount of debris and foot traffic

What’s the best weather condition to apply RV roof coating?

Ideal conditions are:

Temperature between 40–130°F
Low humidity (below 50% RH)
No rain forecast for 24–48 hours
Overcast or mild sun — avoid application in direct intense sun as the coating can skin over before it levels properly
Light to no wind
